The Salesforce Administrator Certification Exam: What You Need to Know (and How to Prepare)

If you’re considering a career in Salesforce—or you’re already working in an organization that uses it—the Salesforce Administrator certification is one of the most valuable credentials you can earn.

This exam isn’t about memorizing obscure features. It’s about proving you understand how Salesforce actually works in real organizations: how data is structured, how users interact with the system, and how to configure Salesforce to support business processes.

In this post, we’ll break down what the Salesforce Administrator exam covers, who it’s for, and how to prepare—especially if you’re balancing work, study, and life.

Exam Format and Structure

Here’s what to expect:

  • Multiple-choice and multiple-select questions
  • 60 questions total (including a few unscored questions)
  • 105 minutes to complete the exam
  • 65% passing score

Questions are scenario-based. You’ll often be asked what you should do, not just what you can do. Salesforce likes best-practice answers that balance usability, security, and scalability.

When I wrote the exam the first time, after using Salesforce for 10+ years, I was shocked that I failed (not once, but twice!). I asked around and found that because I was used to doing things my way, or I had customized it for the way I liked to work, I was having trouble with this point – what I should do….. Third time I passed with no issues once I remembered this tip.

How to Prepare (Without Burning Out)

1. Use Salesforce Trailhead—Strategically

Trailhead is free and excellent, but it’s easy to get lost. Focus on:

  • The Administrator Trailmix
  • Hands-on challenges related to security, data, and automation

Don’t just read—build.

2. Practice in a Developer Org

Create a free Salesforce Developer org and experiment:

  • Build custom objects
  • Create users with different profiles
  • Design reports and dashboards

The exam rewards practical understanding.

3. Think Like an Administrator

When answering questions, ask yourself:

  • Is this scalable?
  • Is it secure?
  • Is it maintainable?

Salesforce exams often include answers that work—but only one that’s best practice.

Salesforce isn’t just for sales—support teams rely on clean configuration to deliver great service.

Final Thoughts

The Salesforce Administrator exam isn’t a memory test. It’s a thinking test.

If you approach it with curiosity, hands-on practice, and a focus on real-world use cases, you’ll not only pass the exam—you’ll become a better systems thinker.

And that’s a skill every modern organization needs.
