Project Planning Doesn’t Always Start Digital

Sometimes, it starts with a pen.

I use project management tools every day—spreadsheets, software, dashboards. They’re essential. But planning doesn’t start there. Real planning happens in the in-between moments:

  • when a thought pops up mid-meeting
  • when someone says something you don’t want to forget
  • when an idea shows up before you’re “ready” for it

For years, I captured those moments anywhere I could. Sticky notes. Margins. Random scraps of paper. Recently, I started bullet journaling—and it’s quietly changed how I think about work. My journal isn’t a replacement for digital plans. It’s the bridge between thinking and execution. Clarity first. Structure second. Once things are clear, then they go digital.

If you work on products, events or projects—and your ideas move faster than your tools—this might resonate. Sometimes the most professional thing you can do is slow down, pick up a pen, and think.

This is my first Traveler’s Notebook – it’s available on Amazon or at the Wanderings website. I purchased mine on Amazon.ca and just recently discovered that Wanderings is a Canadian company. I will buy my next one directly from Wanderings. I am already looking to add a second one to my
